Nobody likes to think about losing their home’s heat in the middle of winter, but it can happen. While you should always contact a professional to handle any major problem with your HVAC system, there are still a few things that you can do if your furnace stops working.

Check Your Furnace’s Power Switch

If your furnace doesn’t work at all, check to make sure that it’s turned on. All furnaces have a power switch that should be easy to find. If you’ve had any maintenance on your furnace recently, it may have been switched off.

Check Your Circuit Breakers

Your furnace won’t work if there is no electricity going to it, so check your circuit breakers or fuse box if you suddenly lose heat. Turn the proper circuit breakers back on or replace the blown fuse, and everything should work fine.

Check Your HVAC Filter

Your HVAC filter should be cleaned or replaced regularly, preferably once a month. If you’re not getting any warm air moving through your home and your filter hasn’t been changed recently, check it out. It could be clogged with dust and debris, especially if you have a large household with lots of children and pets.

Test Your Thermostat

Sometimes, your heating problems have nothing to do with your furnace and everything to do with your thermostat. To make sure that your thermostat is working properly, set it to about five degrees above the room’s temperature to see if your furnace turns on.

Open Your Vents

If your furnace seems to be working, yet there is no warm air moving through your home, check to make sure that your home’s vents are open and unobstructed. This may involve cleaning dust from them or rearranging your furniture, but you should hopefully notice a difference once your vents are no longer closed or blocked.
