What is a dual fuel system?

A dual fuel system pairs a central ducted heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace, controlled by one thermostat. The heat pump handles heating and cooling for most of the year at a low running cost. When temperatures drop, the furnace takes over automatically, so you get fast, reliable heat on the coldest days and air conditioning in summer.

Who qualifies

  • You have a residential FortisBC natural gas account, and the home is your year-round primary residence.
  • You’re replacing a gas furnace that is at least 15 years old and heats most of the home.
  • The home is a detached house, townhouse, row home, duplex or mobile home on a permanent foundation. Condos, apartments and newly built homes don’t qualify.
  • The home doesn’t already have a heat pump or dual fuel system.

Extra requirements for the $8,000 income-qualified rebate

  • Combined household income is below FortisBC’s limit for your household size (see current thresholds).
  • The homeowner is on the FortisBC account and owns only one property in B.C.
  • The home is at least 10 years old, no larger than 3,500 sq. ft. and assessed at under $1.2 million.

Who can install it

Only a Technical Safety BC licensed gas contractor who is a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network can install a rebate-eligible dual fuel system. Hammer’s Heating and Cooling is an HPCN member.
