Upgrade your home’s water heating system with an eligible electric heat pump water heater. Heat pump water heaters are designed to use energy more efficiently than traditional electric water heaters, helping homeowners improve comfort while reducing energy use.

Homeowners in British Columbia may qualify for available rebates when replacing an existing primary electric water heater with an eligible electric heat pump water heater. Eligibility depends on the existing water heater, the new system installed, contractor requirements, and supporting documentation.

Who may qualify?

To qualify, the existing water heater being replaced must be the primary water heater for the home.

The new electric heat pump water heater must:

  • Replace the home’s existing primary water heater.
  • Meet the required eligibility standards for the rebate program.
  • Be installed by a licensed contractor with a GST number and a valid B.C. business licence.
  • Be installed by the appropriate trade professional, such as a licensed heating and cooling contractor and/or plumber.

Emergency replacement of a broken electric heat pump water heater is not eligible. Replacing an existing electric heat pump water heater is also not eligible.

Self-installations are not eligible.

Available rebate amount

  • Rebate amount: up to $1,000
  • Rebate maximum: maximum one primary water heating system rebate per home
  • Bonus eligibility: qualifies as one bonus-eligible rebate

Required documentation

Homeowners applying for a rebate will need to provide supporting documentation after installation.

Required documentation may include:

  • A paid invoice showing the invoice has been paid in full.
  • Proof of full payment or a $0 balance owing.

Application deadline

Rebate applications and supporting documentation must be submitted within six months of the invoice date.
