Upgrade your home comfort and energy efficiency with an eligible air source heat pump installation. Air source heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling by transferring heat between the indoors and outdoors, helping homeowners reduce reliance on traditional electric heating systems.

Homeowners in British Columbia may qualify for available rebates when replacing an existing electric heating system with an eligible air source heat pump. Eligibility depends on the current heating system, the type of heat pump installed, installation requirements, and supporting documentation.

Who may qualify?

To qualify, the home must primarily be heated by electricity. The existing heating system must be able to heat at least 50% of the home during the heating season.

The new heat pump must:

  • Replace an existing hard-wired electric heating system, such as electric baseboards, radiant ceilings, radiant floors, or a forced-air furnace.
  • Be sized to function as the primary heating system for the home.
  • Serve a main living area, such as a family room, living room, or open-concept kitchen-living room.
  • Meet the required efficiency standards for the rebate program.
  • Be installed by a licensed contractor with a GST number and a valid B.C. business licence.

Replacing an existing heat pump or adding a heat pump to an existing heat pump system is not eligible. Self-installations are also not eligible.

Available rebate amounts

Whole home heating

  • Rebate amount: up to $4,000
  • Designed for systems that provide primary heating for the majority of the home
  • May qualify as one bonus-eligible rebate

Partial home heating

  • Rebate amount: up to $1,500
  • Designed for systems that provide heating to part of the home
  • Maximum one primary space heating system rebate per home

Whole home heating requirements

For whole home heating, the heat pump must have a minimum capacity of 12,000 BTU and be sized to meet the heating needs of the whole home. The system must provide primary heating to the majority of finished living spaces, including areas such as the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms.

A contractor may need to complete a heat load calculation to confirm that the system is properly sized for the home.

Partial home heating requirements

For partial home heating, the heat pump must have a minimum capacity of 12,000 BTU and be sized to meet a significant portion of the home’s heating requirements.

The exact eligibility depends on the home, the existing electric heating system, and the heat pump being installed.

Required documentation

Homeowners applying for a rebate will need to provide supporting documentation after installation.

Required documentation may include:

  • A paid invoice showing the invoice has been paid in full.
  • Proof of full payment or a $0 balance owing.
  • For whole home heating systems, a heat load calculation summary sheet and heat load report.

Application deadline

Rebate applications and supporting documentation must be submitted within six months of the invoice date.
